Let's Drive to Palouse Falls
Among the basalt canyons, coulees, buttes, and plateaus of the Palouse--a roughly 19,000 sq. mi (50,000 sq. km), picturesque region in southeastern Washington and western Idaho--Palouse Falls stands out. Formed by the Missoula mega-floods of the Pleistocene epoch over 13,000 years ago, Palouse Falls consists of an upper fall with a drop around 20 ft (6.1 m), and a lower fall with a drop of 198 ft (60 m). Its waters then flow through deep canyons to its confluence with the Snake River about 4 mi (6 km) downstream. Palouse Falls is Washington's official state waterfall and is part of the 94-acre Palouse Falls State Park.

Let's Drive to the Vista House via the Historic Columbia River Hwy.

This video was originally posted in July 2017, six weeks before a massive fire swept through the Columbia River Gorge, scorching most of the area shown in the video. The Eagle Creek Fire was started by a teen playing with fireworks over Labor Day weekend in 2017. It burned out of control for three months before finally being contained in November of that year. Before it was contained, the fire ...

Built in 1931, Mount Rainier's Sunrise Road still ranks among the most beautiful drives in the country. From the park's White River entrance, just off Washington State Route 410 (the Chinook Scenic Byway), the Sunrise Road twists and turns its way 16 miles (25.7 kilometers) into the rich alpine meadows of the Sunrise Visitor Center, near the mountain's northeastern slope. Let's Drive the Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway (WA 821N)

The Yakima River Canyon Scenic Byway is one of Washington state's best-kept secrets. Also known as the Canyon Road, this year-round byway follows the Yakima River for 22 miles through the scenic, sage-covered vistas of central Washington, between the towns of Yakima and Ellensburg. All along the route, stately basalt cliffs rise dramatically above the meandering Yakima River, their crevices and...
Let's Hike to Union Creek Falls, Okanogan-Wenatchee National Forest

Note: This video was shot one week before a lightening strike near the falls started a wildfire that went on to consume over 55,000 acres of the Norse Peak Wilderness. It's a short hike back to Union Creek Falls, but the trail gains roughly 600 ft. (183 m.) quickly in a series of sharp switchbacks that gave this old body quite a workout. The out-and-back trail (#956) runs about 12 miles to Nors...

Let's Visit Multnomah Falls, Bridal Veil, Oregon
Переглядів 1,2 тис.7 років тому
Of the 77 waterfalls on the Oregon side of the Columbia River Gorge, Multnomah Falls is easily the most awe-inspiring. Located just over 30 miles east of Portland, Multnomah Falls is probably the most visited site in Oregon and is as magnificent as any waterfall in the country. And since the falls are fed year-round by underground springs, no matter the season or the weather, a visit to Multnom...

    Hey Anthony! I grew up in Washington and am coming back for a visit in two weeks. I really need helping finding a road or confirming this is the route that my Grandfather took us on from Seattle to Yakima when the seasons allowed. Maybe it is the 410 but I have googled earth'ed the 410 and do not see the crystal clear small lakes on the side of the roads that I remember. Can you please help me. This is a bucket list item to find this road of my childhood and I am bringing my own daughter and her husband with me too. I really need them to see the crystal clear waters of Washington. Please please please and thank you for your post!

    The Canyon Road is a lovely drive; thanks for posting the video. I have a friend, originally from the east coast, who takes this as often as he can between Ellensburg and Yakima. If you're up for adventure, there's also Ellensburg Pass, a road that is actually higher than Snoqualmie Pass at 3137' to the other's 3022'. I'm not talking about Old Durr Road; that one crosses Umtanum Creek and goes over two ridges, a de facto shortcut in the Ellensburg Pass route. It requires a high-ground clearance dualsport motorcycle or 4-wheel drive. Ellensburg Pass connects Wenas Lake and The Wenas area just north & northwest of Selah with Ellensburg, coming out at the old Damman School outside of Ellensburg. In good weather, even a subcompact car can take it, although the road is a bit rough.

    • @AnthonyUbelhor
      @AnthonyUbelhor 2 роки тому

      Thanks for the great tip! I've taken Umtanum Rd. to where it meets Wenas Rd. on my way to Umtanum Creek Falls. (I hope to have a video of that hike this spring.) However, that's as far as I've gone. Looking at the topo, I can see that Wenas Rd. continues on through Ellensburg Pass. I'm definitely going to have to check that out this spring. Thanks again for the tip and for your comment!

    • @AnthonyUbelhor
      @AnthonyUbelhor 2 роки тому

      Thanks for your comment. I have driven most of that route, and it is indeed beautiful. The problem for me is the length of the route and the fact that it's a 6 hour drive to Auburn from where I live. Most of these driving videos require a number of takes in order to get enough footage that isn't crowded with other vehicles. (Nobody wants to watch a video where you're stuck behind a truck or a line of cars on a narrow two-lane road.) I generally like to stick to shorter routes that I can drive multiple times in a day.

      Yes, it is. And with everything from seacoasts with rocky outcrops and sandy beaches to crystal clear alpine lakes and streams and one of the largest rivers in the nation; dense, temperate rain forests to forested woodlands and massive old growth forests; and jagged mountain ranges with snow-capped peak to shrub-steppe deserts and channeled scablands; Washington is one of the most ecologically diverse states in the union. I moved here 10 years ago from Kentucky, and I've yet to grow tired of stepping out my front door and just looking up at the sky.

      Thanks for your comment! I was driving westbound in the video, although I think the eastbound drive is a bit more spectacular for some reason. I shot the video going both ways, but used this cut because I liked the way the morning sun crowned Yakima Peak and Mt. Rainier in gold. The video itself was edited down. Although the UA-cam algorithm prefers longer videos, I found that people generally stop watching after about five minutes, so I try to keep my videos at around that length. Thanks for watching!
